If the Cardinal Flies Home

“We cannot add time to a day. We cannot stop the waves. We cannot pause the earth’s rotation. To try to bend such realities, then, would be futile. So, the chemical reactions produced by our brain. . . can we possibly go against them?”
Alaina Mathers—a pretty typical girl, fond of literature and delving into her own psyche to find even the most minute defect… Because, yes, she has depression. That is to say, according to her mom, therapist, and the rest of the medical industry.
Does anyone else know about this though? No. Not her best friend. Not her school. But maybe the boy who also frequents the counseling center, a boy with his own problems.
When the therapist gives advice to reach out of her circle—her rather small circle… it starts a turn of events. It brings the two teens together in a way Alaina could have never anticipated. As they try to help each other through their situations, it opens a whole new group of people into Alaina’s life. But with her own brain against her, is that going to be enough?

This was a great book. I laughed, I cried, and I was sad when it was over. A very good debut book. Looking forward to reading more!

Yes, No, & the Infinity in Between

Fear is strong. But so are we.
For Marlow Preston, nothing feels certain: her mother’s new relationship, her father’s promises, the meaning of the violent thoughts that bombard her mind. . . On that front, at least, she’s finding answers.
With her recent diagnosis of OCD, she finally feels some of the certainty she’s been chasing. At a local support group, she even finds like-minded people who understand her unique challenges—and Teddy, the insufferable boy who brings his little sister.
Despite their mutual dislike of one another, they become unlikely allies as the two of them—with an ounce of spite—push each other to overcome their fears. But even with the work she does to improve her anxiety, the problems at home only increase.
As the bad feelings between her and Teddy dissipate, however, she may find he’s the one person she needs to help her get through—and just maybe the one person she wants. And with her growing support system beside her, maybe she’ll even see that certainty isn’t worth the chase.

An immensely powerful depiction of finding comfort in the most unlikely of places, all while your mind is its own worst enemy…… This story pulls you in and just does not let go. We walk through Marlow’s life with her, and that means feeling all of the things she is feeling, no matter how much it hurts our hearts at times, and seeing how life affects each of the large and small connections that she has with others.
We share her victories and learn from her missteps.
Wonderfully eye-opening to a piece of a stranger’s story that is usually kept so protected. That vulnerability is what drew me in from the first page.
Marlow’s story will stick with me forever.

I LOVED this book!! It flows really well, and I really like how we get to hear Marlow’s thoughts, like what’s going on inside her head, or running through her mind. And the support group in the story really helped me understand OCD better without it being too preachy. I also really loved seeing the character growth from everyone throughout the story – it makes them relatable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a cute, funny, realistic enemies-to-lovers story.
